Hospitalfield Residencies

Hospitalfield has an international reputation as a residential art centre. Residencies at Hospitalfield comprise:

  • Artists’ residencies
  • Study groups and workshops/masterclasses

Artists’ residencies

Artists' residencies provide time, space and studio access to artists wishing to develop their practice. They are provided both as funded opportunities with our partner institutions, or by independently funded application. Partner funded residencies are currently one month long, but the length of independently funded residencies is by negotiation.

Partner institutions

Residency opportunities are provided through The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour; The Royal Over-Seas League; and the Royal Scottish Academy/ Scottish Arts Council Residency Bursaries.

Other, often project based, residencies are supported by additional organisations including the Hospitalfield Alumni Association and are advertised in the media. The Alumni Association has supported three successful one-month long residencies at Hospitalfield to 2009. At present applications are only accepted from previous Alumni and Members of the Association.

The Royal Over-Seas League no longer accepts open access applications, as nominees are put forward by contributing Commonwealth countries, but information for the RSW & RSA residencies may be obtained from their websites, containing application criteria and other information.

Currently, Hospitalfield cannot award funded residencies from open submission, but we are happy to consider independently funded applications.

Independently funded applicants

To apply for a residency, the following information is required:

  • A curriculum vitae
  • A selection of 6 images of recent work (digital images sent by email are accepted)
  • One side A4 with the following:
    • A concise statement about your practice
    • An outline of work you plan to develop during the residency
    • Why you feel a residency at Hospitalfield would benefit your practice
    • The preferred duration of residency

Applicants applying from other countries are encouraged to apply by email in order to speed up the process. There is no deadline for independently funded applications.

Residency fees

Fees are currently (Jan 2010)  950.00GBP per month, while this figure may be subject to change at any time applicants are assured that once they have been accepted at a particular rate that fee will not be subject to reconsideration.

Study groups

Study groups from all disciplines are welcome at Hospitalfield for residential breaks. The character, surroundings, collections and history of the House provide an inspirational environment for research, small conferences and study, enhanced by working, eating and enjoying social time together.

Residential workshops

Hospitalfield hosts a range of residential workshops and masterclasses both in partnership with practitioners and with Scotland’s universities and colleges. Organisers wishing to develop a programme of their own at Hospitalfield should contact us. Here are the details of current open access workshops.

Summer schools

Hospitalfield has been running accredited summer programmes with North American universities for 25 years, focusing on Hospitalfield’s cultural context in Scotland and Europe. Participants are also taken to the Outer Hebrides or the Northern Isles to experience the contrast with the central region. Summer schools may also include a specialist subject, often provided by an accompanying tutor, or local specialist if required.

"The chance to have uninterrupted time to think, read, transcribe, draw, test ideas and make work was a luxury in itself but the tranquillity of the place seemed, somehow, also to re-sharpen the senses and make one more conscious of light, of colour, of the rhythm of the day and of the night…"
