Working Practices, Methods and Materials in the Artist’s Studio with award winning artist Patricia Cain and Sam Cartman

Monday 13th to Friday 17th August 2012

Working Practices

This 5 day course aims to give an insight into artist materials, traditional recipes, supports and practice; the mainstay of the artist’s studio in the historical and inspirational surroundings of the Hospitalfield Studios. Acknowledging the importance of an artwork as a skilfully made object, and one where form and material are fused - parts of a single whole - this course aims to provide you with an understanding about the potentials and limitations of materials and the value of traditional studio skills. Through demonstrations and technical support, participants will be encouraged to explore and have a go at practising a diverse range of practices and methods that will include;

  • The preparation of supports: making and using gesso, primers, binders, stretchers, boards and canvases.
  • The chemistry of the artist’s pallet: making and using paint and pastels: the characteristics of pigments.
  • The application of materials: oil and water based materials: types and use of brushes.
  • Works on paper: conservation issues, paper types and uses, and the history of using paper in the studio.
  • Presentation of work: framing, gilding, and techniques of hanging work.
  • Advice on running a professional skill-based artists’ practice: requirements for selling work, documentation, CV’s and applications.
