Cubist, Surreal, Abstract Expression in Life Drawing with Ian Cook RI RSW

Friday 16th to Sunday 18th March 2012

Life Drawing

A unique opportunity to spend a concentrated period of experimental study drawing the human form, in the historical surroundings of Hospitalfield Arbroath. Under the skilled tuition of Ian Cook, the course will encourage participants to examine a range of exploratory approaches whilst studying the human figure. Professional models will present a structured series of long and short poses specifically designed to demonstrate different approaches, initially with emphasis in academic and figurative techniques. Followed by a developmental session in which participants will develop works that are not only derivative of the original drawings but also contributory to their producing more substantial artworks. Demonstrations will illustrate the possibilities of realising and investigating the subject in Figurative, Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist styles. Using a variety of quality drawing materials, where possible, montage and collage use will also be encouraged. This course will enable an exciting challenge of artistic abilities & boundaries in a professional and inspiring environment.

The Artist:
A figurative expressionist, Ian Cook has won a number of awards and prestigious acknowledgments for his contribution to the art world. Widely exhibited, collected and travelled, he has over 20 years experience in teaching. Cook trained at Glasgow School of Art from 1969-72, after which travelling bursaries and scholarships sent him on painting expeditions to Spain and North & Central Africa. Continually contributing to his reputation as a traveller, he believes his exploration of other cultures essentially broadens the horizons of his creative experience. With a style described to distort reality “as a means towards translating emotional and intellectual response” his works are both sensitive and atmospheric.
