Saturday 14th April 2012

Howard Alden Jazz

World renowned Jazz guitarist, Howard Alden, has worked with an impressive number of musical legends such as Bucky Pizzarelli, George Van Eps, Mel Powell, Johnny Smith and John Lewis. As well as performing, Howard has been a guitar instructor since the seventies and will be visiting Hospitalfield this April, when guitar enthusiasts are invited to experience a one day masterclass. This progressive workshop is designed to assist aspiring and professional guitarists to develop their jazz technique and playing style. It will conclude with a vocal accompaniment with jazz singer Jeanne Gies and her masterclass students.

Host to Arbroath’s celebrated Jazz programme, organised by Alan Steadman, Hospitalfield is noted for its award winning capture of world famous Jazz musician performances. Coupled with a Saturday night performance by Howard and Jeanne Gies and a beautiful historic setting, this promises to be a truly unique opportunity.

As well as working with a whole host of first class Jazz performers, Howard has featured on the sound track of Woody Allen's 1999 film "Sweet and Lowdown” where he both played and coached the guitar contribution for actor Sean Penn. Do I need to be able to read music?
“It's not necessary to be able to read music - I present some concepts that apply equally to ear players, and actually try to spend more time on developing more sensitivity and understanding through the ear, as well as a lot of guitar techniques. I will have some examples in tab as well as standard music notation, for reference and further study.”
