‘Hospitalfield Arbroath has cast a spell on artists for over 100 years.’
The 2011/2012 Hospitalfield Masterclass Programme has been specifically developed to complement the Patrick Allan-Fraser legacy, the house & its collection. Masterclass guests enjoy a unique, concentrated period of study challenging artistic abilities & boundaries in truly inspirational surroundings. Tailored to the individual, tuition is provided by residential professional artists and participants are encouraged to examine their current approach to creative practice as well as continue to develop their individual personal style.
The 2011 summer’s programme offered a diverse mix of disciplines from Life Drawing, to Bookbinding, Photography to Engraving. Hospitalfield saw the return of Joyce W. Cairns RSA to the house and studios, sharing both expertise and memories, a wonderful experience was had by all. In 2012 we have a number of exiting new additions. Hospitalfield has a 25 year reputation for Alan Steadman’s celebrated Jazz performances and will be offering exclusive music masterclasses with first rate, world renowned musicians. We are also very pleased to warmly welcome Jennifer Mcrae RSA to the masterclass programme. A highly established, award winning portrait painter, Jennifer will be an artist in residence, working in Patrick Allan-Frasers master studio for a month prior to her Portrait Painting course.
Based on two per room, the full board tariff is inclusive of all meals, refreshments, professional tuition & use of facilities. A tour of the house & materials are also provided. Non residential places are available. Please note: we regret to inform that due to the historic nature of the house, we currently provide only limited suitability and disabled facilities for residential guests. The Kinpurnie Print Studio was officially opened on the 28th of February 2011 by benefactor Sir James Cayzer. The studio, in what was once Patrick Allan-Fraser’s dog kennels, has been refurbished over the last six months in association with Dundee Contemporary Arts Print Studio. This new facility complements the excellent historic print collection, and reintroduces a medium which was an important part of the programme at Hospitalfield 100 years ago. Masterclasses, evening classes and annual memberships are in development and will be operated in partnership with the DCA. Please look out for updates.
Early booking essential. Places confirmed on receipt of full deposit.

Testimonials
"Many thanks for such a great week, it was really good to have the structure and discipline intercepted with yummy food and cake! A great success...and hope there will be more to come."
"Great meeting you all, and a privilege to have been on the course."
"An unforgettable week: I have to say how much I enjoyed your classes and the whole week long experience. If it runs next year I will definitely be interested...this was really something quite inspiring for me."
"Thanks for a fab time, what an amazing group of people/artists and lovely to have such a wide age range within the group. I have lain all my work out on the floor and can't believe that I drew them. It has given me the impetus I needed to spend a lot more time drawing."
"Many thanks for an unforgettable week - what a privilege."
"WOW! What a great time it was...I keep thinking of all these wonderful experiences we had thanks to you as I go about my daily chores in a sea of snotty kids! I'm REALLY motivated now and the course has really confirmed for me that this is something I can do and, more to the point, progress in. I've had to suppress such a lot of creativity in the process of bringing up kids over the last 10 years so the course was a major treat!!"
