Visual arts residencies at Hospitalfield have been a vital part of the Scottish art world for over 100 years.

Through the Twentieth Century the estate hosted an annual summer school for the most outstanding students at Scotland's four art colleges.

Increasingly international in scope and interest, the trust now runs a programme of short and longer term residencies from early spring to late autumn.

Originally founded to support the development of fine arts and craft, Hospitalfield has continued to adapt to the methods and outcomes of artistic practice. In recent years this has found particular focus around the engagement of contemporary practice with the history of the house, estate and locality.

As well as being a productive time for research and practical work, Hospitalfield residencies have an important social dynamic. Working alongside other artists, sharing meals and enjoying social time all make for an exciting and supportive environment of artistic exchange.
