Studios
The main studio block consists of a
1901 addition to Patrick Allan-Fraser's 'Painting Room' which dates from
the 1840s. The new block contains 2 large studios with full height north-westerly
facing windows, providing excellent natural light. The smaller room is
of a more domestic scale with a north-westerly window and a small skylight.
The studio also contains a large stone fireplace and a number of casts.
Outside the studios there are 'yard'
areas which are suitable for outdoor sculpture or general construction.
Some 'found' materials are also available on site.
Darkroom
The studio block contains a black and
white photographic darkroom.
The House
In recent years a number of residents
have situated their studio practice in the main house, making site-specific
work in various historical locations, from the main formal rooms to rooftop
towers and attics.
Artists working in new media have also
used spaces and artifacts throughout for temporary installations, projections
or mini-cinemas.
Local Facilities
The trust has links with a range of
local organisations offering specialist production facilities:
Dundee Contemporary Arts, which has
an excellent printmaking workshop.
Angus Digital Media Centre at Brechin
for video, sound and new media production, and equipment hire.
Dundee offers a range of services for
art materials, photo developing, reprographics etc.
Facilities available in Arbroath include:
2 photographic shops, a craft shop, builders merchants, DIY and hardware
shops, photocopying facilities as well as standard high street shops and
a small range of manufacturing companies (marine etc.).
Living Accomodation
Resident artists are provided with
a single room either in the main house or in the adjacent cottage.
Shared meals are an important part
of any residency at Hospitalfield.
There is a common room in the main
house with television and a computer workstation.
A small area of the house is equipped with wireless
broadband access for laptops. |
