Project Developed I was attracted by the places in the house that were empty and rarely used, in particular the stone stairs and small tower rooms around the house and also in the chapel. I drew and photographed these spaces and then use them for the placement of my work. The numerous doors and the experience of exploring at Hospitalfield inspired the casting of resin doorknobs, each had an object enacased which pertained to a specific room of the house. The history of Hospitalfield also fed into my work, I used the clothing of Patrick Allen Fraser and also took inspiration from his belongings and notebooks around the property. I created a copy of his riding coat in paper, a wearable coat which I used for the projection of images. The Victorian fascination with recreating nature, as seen in the chapel, was the starting point for a chain of paper roses which wound around the stairs of the chapel reaching 40 feet in length. I built up several projects simultaneously and I left the residency with an incredible amount of reference material and inspiration for future work, in notes, photographs and sketchbooks. Outcomes An exhibition of the work created during this residency was held at the Royal Scottish Academy in November 2004. I have also exhibited the work in Manchester and North Wales in 2005. I will be studying for an M.A. Drawing at Wimbledon School of Art during 2005/2006. Response This use of space and working site-specifically has become an integral part of my work, and the residency as a whole gave me a new confidence in my work. I also found working alongside other artists gave me an insight into new ways of working and inspired me to experiment with new materials. Contact / Further Information Or by email here
