The Patrick Allan-Fraser of Hospitalfield Trust, a registered charity, was created by Patrick Allan-Fraser himself and was activated on his death in 1890.

The principle aim of the Trust has always been to encourage young artists in their chosen discipline.

In 1980, the constitution was revised by Parliament to allow for a wider range of activities, with a core focus in the visual arts. The Trust operates as a study centre for individual artists, universities, colleges and schools throughout the year.

Increasingly, in recent years, overseas students have found it to be a unique and stimulating introduction to Scottish Art, Architecture and Culture, and an ideal base from which to find and explore our highlands and islands. Programmes of Summer Schools for several US universities have been developed, and are encouraged as part of the diverse programme of the Trust.

The house is also an active host of public events, including the acclaimed Jazz at Hospitalfield organisation, the student Alumni Association, viewings of residents' work, temporary exhibitions, lectures, recitals, conferences, receptions and dinners.
