Hospitalfield, as a field research centre, provides a special opportunity to various areas of study out-with the visual arts. As a centre from which to study the archaeology of the area, the House can supplement the actual examination of sites with a wide range of reference texts. The town commissioned one of Scotland's first town planning reports, which has led to a wide interest in Arbroath as a case study in the evolution of post-war urban planning. The scale allows easy comprehension of the ideas involved. Hospitalfield provides an appropriate centre for the study of the development of the Scottish agricultural landscape, and the history of the industries of the East Coast, from salt-pans to high technology. Perhaps equally appropriate, through historical links with Burns, Scott and Dickens, is the use of Hospitalfield within the study of creative literature, both inspirationally and as a practical study venue. "The House has been used successfully by a very wide range of academic departments for residential presentations and retreats, from electrical engineering to the decorative arts." |
