Education Secretary to visit Hospitalfield
Scotland’s Education Cabinet Secretary Michael Russell will hear at first hand of Hospitalfield’s plans to extend its activities when he visits the historic centre for art and culture in Arbroath on Tuesday 20 April.
Hospitalfield, which has earned an international reputation as a residential centre for artists for over 100 years, has recently refocused its vision making the unique building and its historic collections more accessible to educational groups from colleges and schools as well as to cultural events and activities.
Chair of the Patrick Allan-Fraser of Hospitalfield Trust, Mr Kenneth Cargill said: “We are hugely encouraged that Scotland’s Education Secretary has taken the time to visit Hospitalfield to gauge for himself the enormous potential of the house and collection as an educational and cultural resource for Angus and for Scotland. Our long term plans are ambitious and challenging but we have been overwhelmed by the positive reception to Hospitalfield’s new strategy since our relaunch in March and Mr Russell’s visit is recognition of this exciting new era.”
Michael Russell, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “It is clear that Hospitalfield is an unique and inspiring institution with the potential to encourage and enrich the educational experience of a wide range of pupils and students across all the arts. We will help in anyway we can to unlock the potential of Hospitalfield for the greater benefit of Arbroath, Angus and Scotland.”
While at Hospitalfield Mr Russell will also meet Principal of Angus College Mr John Burt, and a representative of the education department of Angus Council. He will also meet a group of art and design students of North Glasgow College who will be on a residential stay. He will be guided on a short tour of the building by Director Willie Payne.
Mr Russell will be presented with a certificate making him an Honorary Founding Friend of Hospitalfield.
