Sir Mark Jones Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the man leading the initiative to bring the V & A to Dundee, is to be guest of honour at Hospitalfield’s launch on Monday 15 March.

The charitable trust behind the historic house, which has developed an international reputation as an inspirational centre for artists’ residencies, will announce ambitious plans to extend Hospitalfield’s role as a centre of art and culture for Angus.

Sir Mark Jones: “I have a great affection for Hospitalfield.  It is a unique institution which has exerted an extraordinary power over generations of artists who have found inspiration there. Its potential as a cultural asset to Angus and beyond is remarkable. I am pleased to give it my support and I look forward to exploring ways in which Hospitalfield and the Dundee V & A might work together.”

Among the initiatives to be launched is a new Friends of Hospitalfield organisation allowing members privileged access to a range of events including dedicated Tour and Tea afternoons and exclusive use of Hospitalfield for personal dinners and celebrations. Membership will cost £25 per year. A programme of cultural events is being developed for the coming months with high profile speakers including creator of the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series Alexander McCall Smith and, in association with the Alumni Association, artist and award winning-author Alasdair Gray; Aspect Prize winner Patricia Cain; life artist Rebecca Westguard and more.

Chair of the Patrick Allan-Fraser of Hospitalfield Trust, Kenneth Cargill said: “We are delighted that Sir Mark has accepted our invitation to speak at Hospitalfield’s launch. This sends a strong message both locally and to the wider arts world about Hospitalfield’s ambition.  This unique and truly inspiring place is now set for an exciting future. We are creating a leading and inspirational artistic centre, one which enables us to share this remarkable building, its collection and its setting not just with artists but with the wider community.”

In common with other charitable trusts, historic buildings and arts organisations, Hospitalfield is operating in a challenging economic climate and in response is developing a new business strategy with assistance from both the University of Abertay Dundee and the University of Dundee, as well as past input from Scottish Business in the Community, to ensure its continued success.

Hospitalfield will be more widely marketed as a venue for weddings and other events including dinners, workshops, away days and conferences. A fundraising strategy is under development, led by Lady Fiona Fraser.
