20 years of Jazz at Hospitalfield celebrated

Hospitalfield Jazz Suite

A new piece of music has been written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of the country's most popular jazz venues held in the unique setting of Hospitalfield House Arbroath.

The Hospitalfield Suite has been composed over the last three months by Scottish Jazz Award winner, pianist, Paul Harrison. It will be premiered at the venue on Saturday, 13th February.

Expect to hear a set of creative compositions subtly imbued with some of Harrison's heroes such as Duke Ellington, Cedar Walton and Wayne Shorter. Swinging party music, bagpipe tunes and Arbroath ghost stories are also in the mix.

The music has also been written to feature a star soloist, multi-reedsman Alan Barnes who will travel up from England especially for the concert and who will join an otherwise Scottish quintet of Paul Harrison (piano), Phil O'Malley (trombone), Ed Kelly (bass) and Stuart Brown (drums).

Paul says:  "It's always great to write with specific musicians in mind and having Alan Barnes in the group is going to be fantastic. He is very enthusiastic about this and it's been easy to write things that I know he will bring swing and sparkle to , in his unique style."

Jazz broadcaster and promoter Alan Steadman, who runs Jazz at Hospitalfield, says: "Little did we know at the outset that the venue would become so popular, attracting top musicians from both the UK and beyond and enjoying sell-out audiences. I'm sure that everyone is looking forward immensely to hearing Paul's celebratory piece. He's been a regular performer at the venue and knows, first hand, what we've been striving to achieve over the past 20 years."

The Hospitalfield Suite has been partly funded by the Scottish Arts Council and will also be performed later in the year in Glasgow and again in Arbroath.

Tickets for the concert on 13th February (8.00pm) cost £12 and must be reserved by phoning 01382 774648.
