Hospitalfield book to launch at Christmas Open Day

Hospitalfield House BookThe story of one of Angus’s most important cultural resources, Hospitalfield House, Arbroath is a remarkable one. It is best known to artists and art historians but has had little exposure to the wider public. Now that has been put to rights with the publication of a short history of Hospitalfield, a year ahead of the bicentenary of Patrick Allan-Fraser whose vision still drives Hospitalfield today.

In his foreword to the book, simply titled “Hospitalfield House”,  Sir Mark Jones, former director of the V&A London and first Honorary Patron of Hospitalfield  refers to the house and its contents as a “unique survival… very much as Patrick Allan-Fraser left them on his death in 1890.” He notes: “This short history of Patrick Allan-Fraser’s Hospitalfield shows how the son of an Arbroath stocking maker turned around the fortunes of the Hospitalfield estates, made a mark on the international art scene, contributed to the Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland and left a legacy to art, ideas and architecture in his home town which endures 200 years after his birth.”

Visitors to Hospitalfield’s recently instituted programme of open days and events have regularly requested more information on the house, its history and contents. This short book, written by Hospitalfield Director Willie Payne and richly illustrated in full colour throughout, responds to that need in a fascinating narrative that draws together key aspects of the family lore, architecture and art which together have made Hospitalfield an inspiration to major figures in Scottish culture from Sir Walter Scott to Joan Eardley.
