Eventful September programme at Hospitalfield

<< Previous | Next >>

September promises to be a stimulating month at Hospitalfield with a promising historical talk, a rare concert from the Scottish Flute Trio, a Doors Open weekend with music and dancing and a jazz concert.

The programme starts on Thursday 2 September with a talk on historic, local figure Henry T Wyse who made a significant contribution to the art world of the early 20th century. Cabinet maker, artist, etcher, master of ceramics and other crafts, Henry Taylor Wyse (1870-1951) spent 10 years in Arbroath as art master at Arbroath High. Wyse brought the school national success raising it to be ‘one of the most famous art schools in the United Kingdom’. It was also a time when he turned to writing, publishing innovative books on design – and designing beautiful Arts and Crafts furniture, made by the local workshop of William Middleton. His books were printed locally. Throughout his career Wyse worked with pupils, students and his fellow artists towards achieving, individually or collectively, the highest standards in all things and thus raising the quality of life.

In this talk, the latest in Hospitalfield’s Talk and Tapas series, experts Elizabeth Cumming and Heather Jack shine new light on the cultural politics of Arbroath and art in Scotland at the start of the twentieth century. Heather Jack is a collector and author of many articles on early twentieth century Scottish ceramics and ceramists. Elizabeth Cumming is an author and historian of Scottish art and design from the Arts and Crafts Movement to the Colourists. Tickets are £10, including wine and tapas, available online or at the door.

The widely acclaimed Scottish Flute Trio are to play at Hospitalfield, Arbroath on Saturday 4 September in an open concert. The Trio - Ruth Morley, Janet Larsson and Laura Bailie, will be joined by Joji Hirota - Japanese Percussion and Shakuhachi -  to play The Waterfall of Time Suite by Joji Hirota. This suite was commissioned by The Scottish Flute Trio and written in collaboration with visual artist Elizabeth Ogilvie in 1994.  The premiere took place in St Mary’s Cathedral in Glasgow in an amazing water filled environment created by Elizabeth Ogilvie.   Tickets are £8, available online or at the door.

Hospitalfield will open to the public for Doors Open Days – Sat/Sun 11 and 12 September from 11am-4pm and this year for the first time visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy entertainment in the form of music and dance as they tour the historic house. A team of volunteers from the new Friends of Hospitalfield organisation and the local Rotary Club will be on hand to guide visitors round the main attractions.
