Hospitalfield attracts hundreds at doors open days

<< Previous | Next >>

Doors Open Day at Hospitalfield was an overwhelming success this weekend with well over 200 visitors - 84% of whom rated their visit “excellent”. The rest rated it “good”.

Visitors steadily streamed through the doors on Saturday and Sunday, taking  this special opportunity to see the historic house and international artists’ residency in Arbroath which has inspired almost every major artist in Scotland over the last century or more.  Guests from as far afield as the USA and Wiltshire joined those from neighbouring streets and towns to experience at first hand the enchanting building and its superb interiors. They were particularly pleased to extend their tour to the original Patrick Allan-Fraser studios where they could watch two current artists in residence at work.

Kenyan painter Shake Makelele – an international exhibitor sponsored by the Royal Overseas League  – charmed visitors with his colourful African scenes and was so overwhelmed with the response that he agreed to show the results of his residential spell at Hospitalfield at a special “open evening”  on Wed 29 September. Visitors also enjoyed the work of Mairi Malcolm who is on a residency sponsored by the RSW.

Typical visitor responses referred to Hospitalfield as a “wonderful treasure” , “an unexpected find” and a “hidden gem”. They also commented on the friendly and well informed guides – all volunteers who are either members of the recently constituted Friends of Hospitalfield or the local Rotary.

Trust Chair Kenneth Cargill was delighted with the response: “It has been great to see so many people discover Hospitalfield for themselves this weekend. We have had first class feedback – and as a result we are already planning further open days. We look forward to our visitors returning to enjoy Hospitalfield’s busy programme of events over the coming weeks and months.”

Hospitalfield was the only place in Angus to open this year under the Doors Open Day scheme.
